Jarrad Howse- A Blog from China, Hainan Island

25th May 2011

China was never even in the neighbourhood of a surf destination I considered risking my  life to get to. Flying 9 hours on an aircraft without a seat back flat screen is enough to send a modern man into cardiac arrest. There was a reason Ansett fell into a ditch, because they had unpleasant hostesses and their alloy birds were not fit to travel, it appears China Southern gave the fleet a lick of paint and a new LUG.
A decade after their collapse I find myself reading a Yann Martel novel to kill the cinema-less hours en-route to a pretty little palm covered Island in the South China sea. Hainan Island is not quite Bali and almost Box Head, board shorts are necessary, coconuts are drunk and ditching the fins in the rippable lefts is optional. All the while the peoples anthem goes......

......Million hearts beat as one,
Brave the enemy's fire, March on!
Brave the enemy's fire, March on!
March on! March on! On......

PS The waves are kinda pumping!!!
